VBS.
July 17, 2007Muraho!
This week, our team’s main focus is on VBS at the Africa New Life School in Kayonza. We are teaching different Character virtues each day, ones such as love, forgiveness, and courage (I forget the other one). After a discussion with the headmaster, John Africa (a pretty cool last name for a Rwandan), Pastor Connor came to the conclusion that this is the first time that the children have been in a small group experience. Apparently, small-group setting instruction is a revolutionary idea in Central Africa! This is great, because we are able to have the children interact with us while we teach them very important Biblical foundations. While many children attending claim that they have accepted Christ as their savior, we are hoping that this experience helps them become more active in sharing their faith with their friends.
We are performing the same VBS show 4 times a day (for over 700 students in all)…so its safe to say that by the end of the day, we’re pretty tired.
Last night, we had an extrordinary opportunity to visit the home of the Vice President of Living Waters International - a non-profit organization that drills wells for developing countries. Dr. Otto Helwig is here in Rwanda, at the request of President Kagame, to drill wells as part of Rwanda’s Vision 2020 (to get clean water to everyone in the country by 2020). Dr. Helwig has recently become involved with Africa New Life, as Pastor Charles Buregeya is trying to get a clean water source for the school in Kayonza. It was great to be with other Americans – and we hope it has been a blessing to them, as they’ve seen the work of the enemy this month (they were robbed, their ministry associate was robbed & mugged, and Dr. Helwig almost died 2 weeks ago from a broken blood vessel in his stomach).
Please continue to pray for our ministry here…for energy, safety, and health.
God Bless,
David (for the rest of the team).

Elesa,
. My ipod is not working.
May God bless you and the rest of the team this week during VBS. You guys are AWESOME! I am praying that more hearts will be touched during this week of VBS. I know how hard you have worked preparing for VBS. God will use it in a mighty way.
I continue to miss you very much. I hope you are taking your allergy pills.
See you Sunday.
Love Mom

Josh –
Praying for you. I’m SO excited about all that God is doing. Can’t wait to see you in a few weeks.
Thank you for all the updates.
Love,
Heather Hennessey (formerly Johnson)
Carley,
I have loved reading all about your experiences. Wow! I’m sure the safari was incredible!
I am so excited about your different ministry opportunities and will pray for stamina for this week of VBS.
Ask Tim and Elyssa if they need a ride home from the airport. I don’t want them to be stranded since I brought their car home from church. I’m not even sure if they have keys to their house.
We can’t wait to see you on Sunday. Hugs and kisses

Matthew…
We love and miss you so much! We are so excited for you and can’t wait to hear all of the wonderful ways God has glorified Himself through you and the team!
Tyler and Cody arrived safely on Sunday. They are heading to KD tomorrow with the youth group. Yesterday they went bowling and today they went to the movies and swimming with Myranda. Daddy and I are fine. Mary is good too. All is well except for our hearts are aching for a little time with Matthew!
We are praying for you everyday… for strenght, health, patience, joy, vision, discernment, wisdom, and for your heart and mind to continuely be in tune with the Lord.
Love you so much!

I am sure by now your “fear” of acting in front of people is gone. Ha! We are counting the days until your return, and cant wait to hear all the amazing things God has done in your life and the team’s. Here’s a fun thought- you try out for cheerleading 2 weeks from today!
We love you, and miss you!

Megs!-
Mom and Dad are visiting in New York right now but they continually ask me to check the blog and E-mail to see what’s the latest. They are continually praying for you! So, becuase they have limited internet access, I will be serving as the parental figure for the time being…ahem…
We hope that you are continuing to have a great time! All of that VBS sounds tiring so we pray that you guys are staying well-rested and full of energy for those kids. Make sure to really soak in the last few days there (I don’t mean to make you sad…sorry.) We can’t wait to see you and hear about it on Sunday! Bye!
And, thus, because I am the temporary parental figure: Don’t Forget to take your malaria pills!! Love you!
Your Family.
Erin,
How exciting to hear about your safari trip – Hope all is well with you.
The photo of you outside the genocide museum was very moving. I trust that God is caring for you there. We miss you and look forward to having you home again.
Love from all of us here.

Great to hear from you all again! David, you are awesome to keep us all informed. Haley, we are now beginning the “Haley will only be gone for four more sleeps” process that you know so well! We are incredibly proud of each of one of you, and absolutely ecstatic that God has been glorified in a country that is in such desperate need to hear of Him. I can only imagine what the Rwandans must think of you all, serving your Lord this way. Stretch out and finish strong (can you tell we are at a swim meet nearly every day of our lives!) for the remainder of your time; don’t let one opportunity pass you by to do the work God called you to do! We look forward with great anticipation to hearing the miracles that He allows you to see these last four days….I am believing God for them and praying for you all throughout the day.
Love
Melinda for the Bargery family
Dear team,
Praying for strength for the VBS marathon. Maybe you’ll bring back some good ideas for Diana for “jpod”:). I’ve been thinking of passage we used as our theme for camp last year, the armor of God. So I’ve been praying for you all that you are putting on your armor each day.
We are getting fired up for our trip next week! In the meantime finish well, and “be strong in the Lord and the power of His might.”
p.s And don’t forget to take your malaria pills (free medical advice from “Dr. Laura”…)
p.p.s Tim P, belated happy birthday…(thought you could avoid it being in another country. hmm. Doesn’t work for me, either)
Hey you guys!
I just can not wait until you all come home and share all of your amazing, touching, and inspiring stories! You have all been in my prayers constantly. I hope that you continue to touch lives until the very last day of your trip and my prayer is that all your work will live on through the children you all are sharing our amazing faith with. You are doing the Lord’s work and furthering His kingdom….you all inspire me! I love you guys.
Haze,
I miss you tons and tons. Swim team has been really good and it’s so cool because every time someone asks me when you’re coming home (which happens alot…people must like you or something..) I go right into a big story about what you all have been doing over there and how you all are working to touch lives. I hope it puts a smile on your face to know that you’re not only having an effect in Africa, but back here in VA aswell. Wether they want it or not everyone is up to date on what you’ve been doing
Oh and as of now i’m 10th in line for all stars…that’s going to change
I can’t wait till you come home! I love you I love you I love you!
Sarah
Hey, Team Rwanda! Very exciting reading about your VBS sharing the Living Water and you learning at the same time about the need for physical water. Well worth my time getting lost in Columbus here looking for the public library so I could check your blog! Thank you!
KT – you are asleep now, but Andy has his last jump tonite. On his first jump his helmet blew off, fortunately he had a soft landing. Looking forward to hearing more about the trip, you all will be winging your way home in no time!
Erin Mackie,
Are you having fun yet? Oh, and hahahaha THANKS for stealing my CLOTHES! I look at the pictures of you in Africa, and there’s my running shirt! Now I am going to steal one of YOUR shirts whenever I get home.

“Its…my…stapler, that’s, the last straw…”
Hey Team Rwanda!
It’s awesome to hear about all the amazing stories and things you are doing. Reading your blog has encouraged me a lot for my missions trip to Ukraine and a lot of us are keeping up with this and praying for you. What I read from these entries amazes me and I hope that God will give each one of you a once in a lifetime experience and memories you will never forget. I’ll continue praying for you all. Stay healthy and safe. See you soon!
Tina and Mon- I miss you both a lot. Me, SarahDa and Katie are hanging out this Sunday. If you aren’t too jetlagged, we’ll come by and pick you guys up because I get my license on Friday
Anyways, we kind of wanted to attack your houses but Katie has her little Harry Potter thing on Saturday so… we won’t. I love you both.
And Mr. and Mrs. C, don’t worry we’re not going to harm your lovely home
SOOOOOO…. excited to see your posting this morning when I checked in on you! We have been praying for VBS– how exciting for you to give yourselves to these children who have never had one on one time. And the content of your message- the love and forgivness of Jesus- that is a priceless picture. Have a wonderful “wrap up” with them. Your fingerprints are forever on them- you have made a difference for the Kingdom!
Be safe and finish strong! Maribeth
Ben,
It is so good to be able to hear about all of your ventures in Rwanda. I am looking forward to hearing about the things that you have experienced and learned. What a wonderful opportunity. Remember that I am praying for you each day.
Mom (Anne Hayes)
Greetings Pilgrims, Like so many of your family, friends, and church, I have prayed multiple times dailey for your safety, health, ministry, growth, etc. What a special time God has blessed with in Rwanda. Now I am praying for your re-entry back home. You are not the same person that left VA two weeks ago. God has done something unique and you will never be quite the same person. You will in actuality be leaving a part of your heart in Africa but you will also be taking a part of theirs with you. In the eyes of those childen you have seen love, hope, and incredible need. In the voices of their elders you have seen a new level of spiritual maturity. It will be easy to relate your experiences, but I would encourage you to relate your hearts when you get back. Gods speed, Dad Dancy(Grandpa Dah).
Hey Guys,
Just reading the blog gives me goose bumps!! It looks like God is planting a lot of seeds and doing some pretty astounding work! I really can’t wait for all of you to come home so I can hear all the stories that God has given you the amazinig oppurtunity to experience. Keep your heads up!!! And you’re in my and my family prayers constantly. I love you all sooooo much!!!!!! and yes life back here in VA is quite boring!!!!! haha. Keep up the good work.
<3 Mariah
As your time in Rwanda draws to a close I pray that the seeds God has allowed you to plant and the lives He has allowed you to touch will flourish “mightily” for His glory. I also pray for your goodbyes there and your transition back into your lives here which will be viewed differently because of your experiences these past couple of weeks. Josh–we are really looking forward to your return, we love you and are praying for you.
Sandra Johnson (Mom)
P.S. Josh, your final malaria pills will be waiting for you.
Heather — I’m at the Springs this weekend. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you next week and to hear about your experiences in Rwanda. Be prepared to give a report! Have a safe and pleasant flight back to the US. Love, Mom
Erin Bug, and Team,
We will be praying you home safely. That God will go before you, and strengthen you when needed. He will surround your flights with angels, and your pilots will be well rested. You are leaving an eternal footprint in Rwanda, and what a honor to have served Christ in a foreign land. Oh how we have missed all of you. A special thanks to all the adults who have been your “parents” for these 2 weeks. Make sure you let them know how much you appreciate their guidance and wisdom. See you soon!
Erin, your brother has shed many a tear missing you!:) Be ready!
Love you all,
Steve and Martha Mackie
Haley
Sorry! I don’t know how that happened! We are so excited to see you all on Sunday. Mary Margaret is counting down. We will be praying fervently for you as you travel, and are so thankful that God gave you this opportunity to serve Him. Be ready to debrief upon arrival!
Love
Mom
Our prayers continue…we are praying for your safe travel and for the Lord to continue to overwhelm you these last days with His Majesty, His Power, His Grace, His Providence, His Presence. Praise God!
