We’ve Been Really, Really Busy…Really!

July 15, 2007

Wow…we have been really busy since the last post and there is much to share.  We ventured to a Game Preseve for an overnight and arose early Friday morning at 5:30 AM for a trip into the park to see the wild animals.  We were not disappointed!!!  Within a few minutes of our early morning adventure our expert guide had us looking at impalas, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, baboons and hippopotamus (at which point Meredith Holley erupted in singing I Want a Hippomotamus for Christmas) and  all sorts of African landscape.  It was breathtaking.

Upon our return, we had breakfast at the lodge…an extended quiet time with the Lord, and lunch before the nearly 3 hour trip back to Kigali.  That evening we planned our Saturday AM activity with the sponsored children of Africa New Life at the Dream Center.

Saturday AM, we headed out to the Dream Center and, upon our arrival, noticed immediately that the kids who were sponsored were in much better condition than the street kids that we ministered to earlier in the week.  It was a powerful demonstration of the work that Africa New Life is doing here with these kids.  In fact, we found out that one of our translators named Robert was one of the first sponsored children of Africa New Life Ministries.

We spent about 4 hours with a huge crowd of kids playing games with them, sharing our testimonies and the Gospel, and helping to make an impact for Christ.  We also distributed gifts that had been sent along with us by sponsoring families from IBC and other families from Northern VA.

While the IBC students were with the kids, Pastors Connor & Holley and Pastor Charles met with Dr. Otto Helweg who is working with the Rwandan government to get water to Rwandans.  Pastor Charles has been trying to get water to the New Life Christian Academy at Kayonza.  Dr. Helweg (a classmate of Ed Britton’s at the Naval Academy)  also is the Rwandan Director for Living Waters…a ministry that our VeNture Ministry has linked with for projects in Central America.  Long story short…he offered to personally be involved in the project and even offered to pay for it.  PTL!!!

Saturday afternoon, the team put together another impromptu community gospel presentation with another academy award winning performance of the Parable of the Prodigal Son.

Later that evening after dinner, we met with Pastor Charles, his wife Florence and Pastor Emmanuel (our trip coordinator) and asked them to share their stories of how they came to Christ and how they were led into ministry.  The room got very quiet as Charles shared how he faced persecution and beatings from a church plant effort that he was involved with in Uganda.   We have learned much from these godly servants of Christ.

This morning Pastors Steve and Michael preached at New Life Bible Church and Divine Dynasty Church, respectively.  Once again, we were ‘wow’ed by the full and active worship!  When they praise God, they sing with all they have, they dance in place in time to the music, and make sure that each verse is sung 10 times.   Our pastors were tired well before they preached.

This afternoon Tim Pinkard and Jonathan Dancy ventured over to the stadium to hear Rick Warren speak.  Meanwhile, Pastor Holley returned to speak to the African New Life Youth Group (and no…he did not out draw Rick Warren)…but he and our music team (Josh Johnson, Ben Hayes, Carly Warden, and Paige Terry) had a great time!

Tonight, our team entertained the Kanombe Boys home and taught them “Wiffle Ball” the precursor to our great American pastime, baseball.

This next week, we will enter into the toughest part of our work.  Our VBS program in Kayonza will have us ministering to 700 children and have us leaving our guest house at 7 AM and returning at 6 PM…we will have a one hour-twenty minute commute.

Several on our team have had some allergy problems caused by the dusty roads and have experienced hoarseness. So it would be important when you pray to remember that aspect of our experience. But, aside from that, we are in good health, good spirits, and look at the next four days to really stretch as we serve the Lord.

Thanks for your prayers…your support…and your love.  We will probably not be able to get an update to you until Tuesday or Wednesday…but we promise to take lots of pictures.

 Blessings to All!

  1. Hey, Monika we were so happy to hear from you. Praying for you constantly–that God would accomplish much through all of you, but also, that He would change you in some wonderful ways as well. It is so quiet around here without you. Today we went to church and then onto dad’s new office in the city to hang pictures (could have used your input) and then onto the Native American museum with Ian. Was fun. Dad needs some new photos of all you kids in his office. Well, will be praying for VBS this week. love you more than life—mom
Michael, Michelle, Andrew and Tina—Just an update on what we have learned about Snickers while he has been with us this last week– he likes (licks) everyone he meets, he likes meg’s food more than his own (and Meg likes his), he thinks I am his new mom, he doesn’t like his kennel at night but prefers to sleep with Ian, he likes to go anywhere I go in the car (prefers not to be left behind with meg). Seriously, he is doing well and seems very happy. love you guys and praying for you. Val (am sending this again, b/c I sent it on the wrong site).

  2. Heather — It’s great to get such an awesome report over the internet about your activities in Rwanda. His hand appears to be on this adventure. We went to see Camelot today at Wolftrap to celebrate our anniversary. We’re looking forward to catching up with you when you return. Vaya con Dios! Oh, by the way, I’m seeing 3’s.

    Love you,

    Mom

  3. Tim & Elyssa – Howdy from TEXAS!!
We’ve been keeping up with your trip on this wonderful website. What a thrill to hear of your activities as they unfold. Dad & I pray daily for your ministry, good health & safety. My bible study ladies are praying for the group too. I know that the work you are doing in Christ will further His kingdom.
“…so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.” 2 Cor. 4:15
    Love you,
    Mama’witz

  4. Good morning. It’s 6 p.m. Sunday in El Paso, while directly to the north, it’s an hour earlier in Santa Fe and Denver. The most amazing thing, though, is that Tim got to go all the way to Africa to see Rick Warren in Rwanda, thus avoiding the spirit-crushing flight across North America to hear Rick in Lake Forest, Calif. You and Elyssa look good in the blog pictures — relaxed and confident in the Lord. We’re praying for your health and safety, and that God let you see how effectively he’s using you and your teammates while you’re in Rwanda. What a great reward that is when He bestows it. Praise God for his strength and wisdom.

  5. All,

We were thrilled to see an update on the blog yesterday. So many are asking about the trip, and it is clear to me that God is using your time there to bring people here to Him! How amazing our God is to orchestrate such a thing. We cannot wait to hear every last detail so that we can rejoice with you in person. Haley, Jackson returned from the D.C. trip yesterday, and he reports having had an amazing time just like last year. Mary Margaret was a star at the swim meet on Saturday. She swam the entire race without a noodle and cracked EVERYONE up by joining in the dive contest (yes, the DIVE contest for older children)at summerfest. In fact, she thinks she won! Sarah is still swimming and coaching…no all-star relays for Daventry this year:( Bible study is amazing…about 10 women…still asking really important questions and talking about which study we will do next! We love you and cannot wait to give you a big hug.

    Love
    Mom

your birthday soon. Love you, Mom P.

  7. Hi All,
I am tired after reading about all you have been doing since your last post…you must be exhausted. I am praying for your strength, multiplied rest, and total dependence on the Lord as you finish strong these last few days. When you feel tired just think of the 30 children who made decisions for Christ last week, think of the many, many more who will spend eternity with Christ Jesus because God has chosen YOU to share the Good News with them, & think of your family & friends who are being impacted by this trip here at home. We are so proud of you & know that this trip has not been an easy one. We can’t wait to have you home & to hear every detail of the trip & to love on y’all.
    Finish Strong,
    Kamber
    “Doot-doot Daddy” Love, Sara Grace

  10. NEWS FLASH from here: Beth B. had her baby this morning. Leo is 5 lbs and so far – doing fine, but they are watching his breathing since he is a little early!
Praising God for all He is doing in and through all of you in Rwanda. Looking forward to your return.
    Love-
    Mary’s Mom

  11. Hi again, everybody. The reports have been wonderful – so full of details and cause for praise to God. Isn’t it an awesome thing to be an instrument in the hands of Almighty God??
After all this activity and serving, we wonder if you might be getting “weary in well doing”, so here’s a good verse to stand on for the next couple of days: “We are praying, too, that you will be filled with His mighty, glorious strength so that you can keep going no matter what happens – always full of the joy of the Lord, and always thankful to the Father Who has made us fit to share all the wonderful things that belong to those who live in the kingdom of light.” Col 1:11,12-Liv. Bible
Love and prayers, Judy Dancy [Jono: we sure miss hearing your voice! Look forward to the time when we will again :-) ]
